The Day of Pentecost commemorates when the Holy Spirit alighted on the disciples like tongues of fire, imparting spiritual gifts and allowing them to speak in all manner of languages in order to preach the Gospel. This event signifies the creation of the Church universal, the body of Christ’s followers in the world, continuing in their ministry and teaching after Christ’s ascent into heaven, even to this day. Pentecost reminds us all that we have each received gifts from the Holy Spirit that enable us for ministry and help us to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to others. This Sunday, I invite everyone to wear red, and to remember that just as the disciples were empowered by the Holy Spirit, we too are gifted with all we need in order to do God’s work in the world.
