Most of you all probably know that I’ve been asking for volunteers to bake treats as a thank you to those who work at our local schools. But some of you may be asking, “why do we care so much about teachers (and all other staff members at schools) that we feel compelled to express our appreciation for them by plying them with delicious sugary treats?” I’m so glad you (presumably) asked! Those who help support the education of children in our community provide an invaluable service. Most kids spend almost half their waking hours during the school year at school. So those who have chosen careers that support the education of children can have a huge impact on their lives.
A parishioner who used to be a teacher recently told me about some happy news she received. She explained that when she was still teaching, she had a student who was a bit of a troublemaker, but who always got along with her. She remembered how she saw great potential in him, and even told him that she thought he would make a great teacher himself. So she was glad to hear that this little boy had grown up, and to hear from him that he has recently taken a position at one of our local schools…as a teacher! She was so happy to have made a positive impact on this person’s life.
Teachers mentor countless students over the course of their work, and support staff ensure that schools are able to create an environment that fosters learning for the children that attend their schools. And each and every child has the potential to grow up and make a positive impact on the world. So we bake goodies to show our support for some of the people who will help shape the path of the next generation, to thank them for taking on this important task. It’s a small gesture to show our appreciation of people that choose to help our community’s children in a large way. Please join in on thanking our teachers!
